# Compare – Plants

Two to five plants or corporate groups (countries: up to six) in one table – identification, profile, products, capacity from documents, ownership control and data reliability; countries also with population, electricity price, trade in products, the R02 forecast and flow-analysis indicators. The comparison lives in the page address: the link can be saved, shared and cited.

## Method note

- **Missing data is not zero** – “–” means the register holds no information. No product-class entry is not proof that the class is not made – an entry exists only when a primary document names the class.
- **Capacity only from documents** – Capacity and output come from the plant’s document (report, release, permit), in its unit; without a document – “not in the document”, no estimates. Group capacity totals cover operating plants with a value in a document (one metal, one stage, the same unit) – a lower bound, given with the number of plants.
- **Coverage** – Every row shows the number of items with a value against the number of compared items (e.g. “known: 2/4”); in plant product rows – plants with at least one documented product.
- **Definition of control** – Country of the controlling entity as in “Ownership control” (D17): (a) ultimate parent from GLEIF Level 2, (b) GLEIF exception – the company controls itself, (c) group from company documents, (d) not established. The share from outside the EU is among plants with an established controller; the counting unit is a plant, not weighted by capacity.
- **Country scope** – Operating, idled and under-construction plants (as in “Ownership control”); closed plants and plants of unknown status are not counted.
- **Country context and trade** – Population – Eurostat demo_pjan; industrial electricity price – Eurostat nrg_pc_205 (period, band and tax variant in the note); trade – Eurostat Comext, reporter = country, the file’s series of years, net mass in t, each metal separately, never added up across metals; a year without data – a gap. EU-27: population and trade – sum of the Member States, electricity – EU value from the file or population-weighted average.
- **Forecast and flow indicators** – R02 forecast – median and p10–p90 range for model countries only; indicators from the “Metal flows” analyses – shared by the compared countries, with the fact card; a country without an analysis – “no analysis”.
- **Per capita** – The “per capita” switch divides plant counts by population (per million inhabitants) and trade into kg per inhabitant; population of the latest year of the file for the whole series.
- **Reference** – Countries – EU-27 (total or structure); plants – median of register plants in the same value-chain links (numbers only); groups – median of the 10 largest groups (by number of plants) in the dominant metal of the comparison.
- **Distances** – Great-circle distance (haversine formula, Earth radius 6371 km) between plant coordinates – not road distance.
- **No rankings** – The comparison does not rank items by capacity and holds no company financial data; the user sets the column order. Dataset as of 2026-10-19, version 2.26.
